SpaceX reveals 14th Starship flight this month

SpaceX plans the 14th Starship flight test for late August. The mission would mark two major firsts. It would place Starlink V3 satellites into orbit and catch the upper stage on land for the first time.

CEO Elon Musk outlined the ambitious goals during SpaceX’s first-ever quarterly earnings call as a public company.

The flight plan marks a dramatic acceleration in the reusable rocket program. Just one test flight ago—Starship’s 13th mission in late July. The upper stage demonstrated improved landing capabilities with a controlled splashdown over the Indian Ocean.

Landing Starship’s upper stage — the “ship” portion of the two-stage system — represents the final piece of SpaceX’s reusability puzzle. The company has caught the Super Heavy booster three times already. It used the launch tower’s giant arms, called chopsticks. The most recent capture was in March 2025. But bringing the ship back from orbit introduces a far greater degree of difficulty.

During Flight 14, the Super Heavy booster is expected to land in the Gulf of Mexico. It has completed this outcome in its past five tests. However, Musk’s long-term vision is more ambitious. The tower would first catch Super Heavy, then reposition to recover the ship 90 minutes later after an Earth orbit.

“Probably a year from now, we will be doing at least one flight a day, possibly more,” Musk projected.

The timeline depends heavily on regulatory sign-off. SpaceX is recovering the Flight 13 ship from the ocean for inspection. Satellite imagery from geospatial intelligence firm Vantor shows this. Musk said the timing of the next flight depends on approvals. The landing attempt also hinges on these approvals.

Starlink V3: A tenfold leap in capacity

The 14th flight’s secondary mission is equally consequential for SpaceX’s core business. The company intends to deploy Starlink V3’s first operational batch using Starship. They are next-generation broadband satellites. Musk asserts the upgrade will be dramatic in performance.

Those satellites are “expected to deliver 10 times the amount of broadband capacity and data density from our current generations,” Musk told analysts on the earnings call.

The V3 satellites are substantially larger and heavier than the V2 Mini spacecraft currently launched in batches aboard Falcon 9 rockets. Starship’s enormous payload bay — and its ability to carry up to 60 V3 satellites per launch, according to SpaceX’s IPO prospectus — makes the new rocket essential to deploying the upgraded constellation at scale.

A handful of V3 satellites were briefly tested during Flight 13, but they followed a pre-planned trajectory and burned up on reentry approximately 20 minutes after deployment. Flight 14 would mark the first attempt to place the satellites into a persistent orbit.

The Starlink engine

The Starship-Starlink relationship has become central to SpaceX’s financial story. In its first earnings report since going public in June, the company disclosed that revenue from its Starlink broadband service has soared past its launch services business, which serves external customers including NASA, the Department of Defence, and commercial satellite operators.

SpaceX launches of its own Starlink satellites have gradually overtaken the share of missions flown for outside clients, tightening launch availability across the industry just as global demand for space access accelerates. A fully reusable Starship — capable of launching massive batches of V3 satellites at a cadence of daily flights — would fundamentally reshape the economics of both the launch and broadband markets.

NASA and the moon

The land-catch test will also draw intense scrutiny from NASA. The agency has contracted SpaceX to develop a lunar-lander variant of Starship for its Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the moon’s surface. A successful upper-stage recovery would demonstrate the precise landing control and reusability that the moon mission architecture requires.

The Starship Human Landing System, as NASA calls it, would rely on a version of the upper stage that lands vertically on unprepared lunar terrain — a manoeuvre that shares core engineering DNA with the tower catch attempt planned for this month.

With regulatory approvals pending, weather conditions at Starbase to monitor, and the technical complexity of a first-ever orbital ship catch, the late-August timeline remains ambitious. But the flight, whenever it occurs, will represent a defining moment for the rocket Musk has called “the holy grail of spaceflight” — and for the publicly traded company now betting its future on it.
