Microsoft unveils digital Xbox consoles and games at annual showcase

  • It is launching three new Xbox console variants: the Xbox Series S in white, the Xbox Series X in white with a digital-only design, and a special 2TB Xbox Series X in a unique black “Galaxy” colour.

The recent Xbox Games Showcase hosted by Microsoft was a pivotal event that introduced new iterations of Xbox Series X and S consoles, along with previews of several upcoming games, notably the next “Call of Duty”.

In response to industry challenges such as declining sales and studio closures, Microsoft unveiled three consoles, including a disc-less version of the Series X and S, alongside a special edition Series X with 2 terabytes of storage at $599.99, and a 1TB Xbox Series S in white for $349.99, The new white Xbox Series X matches the ‘robot white’ color of the Xbox Series S, which costs $299.

Of particular note is the introduction of the white Xbox Series X, aligning with the ‘robot white’ color of the Series S. This move hints at a potential reshuffling or postponement of the rumored ‘Brooklin’ refresh, an all-digital version of the Series X.

The Xbox hardware chief emphasised these developments in a blog post, aiming to potentially bolster console sales against competitors like Sony’s PlayStation 5.

The Games Showcase not only featured highly anticipated titles like “Doom: The Dark Ages” and the latest “Gears of War” installment but also emphasized the inclusion of games like “Doom” and “Call of Duty” on the Xbox Game Pass upon launch.

The strategy underscores Microsoft’s focus on subscription services as a means to engage consumers amidst economic uncertainty.

Additionally, the event showcased upcoming games like “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” and new titles such as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Life is Strange: Double Exposure, offering a varied gaming experience for audiences.

With exclusive looks at Xbox-developed games like Perfect Dark and Avowed, as well as features like enhanced movement systems in “Black Ops 6”, the Showcase demonstrated Microsoft’s commitment to delivering compelling gaming content to its audience.

Developers Treyarch and Raven software showed clips from the campaign of the game that takes place in the early 1990s, touting features such as a new movement system allowing players to sprint in all directions, and a glimpse at the fan-favorite “Zombies” mode.

Apple’s Passwords app likely at WWDC on June 10

  • New app, compatible with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, harnesses the power of iCloud’s Keychain, offering a seamless, secure means for users to manage and share vital login credentials across their devices.
  • App promises to streamline the process of safeguarding access to various websites and software.
  • Apple has responded to evolving regulatory dynamics by ensuring a minimum of five years of support for its iPhone 15 series.

Apple’s imminent release of “Passwords” is slated to revolutionise the sphere of user password management.

With its launch set to coincide with the forthcoming Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) commencing on June 10th, this innovative app is positioned to supplant established competitors like 1Password.

The new app, compatible with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, harnesses the power of iCloud’s Keychain, offering a seamless, secure means for users to manage and share vital login credentials across their devices.

Unlike its predecessors, the app promises to streamline the process of safeguarding access to various websites and software.

Categorisation capabilities

Rivaling incumbents such as 1Password and LastPass, Apple has designed its app to enable effortless password imports, alongside anticipated compatibility with Windows PCs and the Apple Vision Pro headset.

Set apart by its organised and structured approach, Apple’s Passwords app is projected to feature categorisation capabilities, allowing users to manage passwords according to distinct criteria, including Wi-Fi networks and individual account passkeys.

Further reinforcing its comprehensive utility, the Passwords app may potentially assume the functions of an authenticator, providing one-time authentication codes.

Moreover, it might prompt users to transition to Face ID and Touch ID authentication methods. Additionally, speculations suggest that this app may coincidentally serve as a preparatory platform for the anticipated integration of ChatGPT for iPhone users, further cementing Apple’s commitment to harnessing cutting-edge AI technology.

Five years support for iPhone15 users

In a significant pronouncement addressing software support, Apple has responded to evolving regulatory dynamics by ensuring a minimum of five years of support for its iPhone 15 series.

The move, necessitated by recent UK directives, marks a departure from the tech giant’s historically implicit approach regarding software update durations.

While trailing behind Samsung and Google’s ambitious seven-year support guarantees, Apple’s baseline pledge of five years underscores its commitment to long-term support, a sentiment reinforced by its track record of extending support well beyond this specified period.

As Apple readies its groundbreaking foray into password management and reaffirms its dedication to sustained software support, the tech industry anticipates a paradigm shift in user convenience and customer-oriented service — mark the calendars for Apple’s forthcoming triumphs.

Russia is a primary source of cyber threats to Olympics: Mandiant

  • Concerns have been raised about political retribution due to France’s stance on issues like Ukraine and Russia’s ban from competing under their flag.
  • In addition to Russia, other countries like China, Iran, North Korea, and Belarus also pose cybersecurity threats, albeit at varying levels of severity.

The upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics is not immune to cyber threats, with notable cybersecurity firm Mandiant, a subsidiary of Google, highlighting Russia as a primary source of cyber threats to the prestigious event.

Specifically, Russian threat groups like Sandworm, also known as APT44 or Frozenbarents, have been identified as posing significant risks, based on their past track record of targeting major international events.

Mandiant warns that Sandworm is not only engaged in intelligence collection but also has the capability to execute disruptive, destructive, or hybrid cyber operations that could undermine the smooth functioning of the Paris Olympics.

Credential phishing campaigns

The assessment is supported by past instances where Russian cyber gangs targeted major sporting events like the Rio 2016 and Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics.

During the Rio 2016 Games, Fancy Bear (APT28) infiltrated anti-doping officials’ networks and leaked sensitive data, while Sandworm created disruptions during the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Games by employing tactics such as credential harvesting and malware distribution.

Mandiant’s findings reveal a pattern of malicious activities by Russian threat actors that extend to leveraging Android applications and conducting credential phishing campaigns.

Moreover, Mandiant’s intelligence indicates that pro-Russian information operations are likely to be a prevalent threat during the Summer 2024 Olympic Games, with narratives promoting pro-Russia, anti-Ukraine, and anti-Western sentiments. This aligns with the geopolitical context surrounding France’s stance on Ukraine and Russia’s exclusion from competing under its flag.

DDoS attacks

The firm also warns of potential cyberattacks orchestrated by hacktivist groups like Anonymous Sudan, Cyber Army of Russia Reborn, and others, targeting the Olympics through disruptive means such as distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.

Apart from Russia, countries like China, Iran, North Korea, and Belarus are also identified as posing cyber threats of moderate to low severity to the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Mandiant points to Chinese-sponsored groups like APT31, APT15, UNC4713, and TEMP.Hex as potential threats to organisations and individuals associated with the event, underscoring the diverse range of state-sponsored cyber actors vying to exploit vulnerabilities in the Olympic ecosystem.
